MATHEMATICSThe month of April began with the introduction of the chapter "Basic Geometrical Ideas." Students were informed that the word "geometry" is derived from the Greek word "geometron," which consists of two parts: "geo" meaning Earth and "metron" meaning measurement. This highlighted that geometry is the mathematical study of shapes and figures, which are prevalent in our daily lives. The lessons progressed by assessing the students' prior knowledge of geometry through an activity where they identified various terms such as point, ray, line, and line segment. Students learned and practiced creating different shapes like intersecting lines, parallel lines, open and closed curves, and polygons. They also enjoyed a Rangoli-making activity, which further enhanced their understanding of shapes. The subsequent chapter, "Understanding Elementary Shapes," was introduced, and students were guided to create angles, triangles, and their types using matchboxes or sticks. The class discussed NCERT textbook questions through written work, facilitating a deeper comprehension of the topic. SCIENCEPHYSICS: The students explored new ways of learning the concept of measuring lengths through a hands-on activity. They measured the lengths of various objects such as a notebook, pencil box, and study table using both standard and non-standard units like handspan, pace, and cubit (arm's length). They learned the correct techniques for using a scale and a tape measure to avoid parallax errors. Additionally, they discovered alternative methods for measuring the length of curved lines using a thread. Circular objects like bangles were measured using both standard and non-standard units. In addition to that, the students learned about different types of motion through a role-play activity and real-life examples such as the motion of a fan, a bicycle on a road, and a pendulum clock. It provides opportunities for students to take initiatives, make decisions, and be accountable for their actions. In order to help students understand the concept of solutions, solute and solvent, as well as saturated and unsaturated solutions, a hands-on learning activity was designed. During the activity, students were given the task of adding sugar to both cold water (creating a saturated solution) and hot water (creating an unsaturated solution). This practical experience allowed them to observe the differences between the two types of solutions and deepen their understanding of the concept. To further enhance their understanding of the process of separating insoluble solid substances from a liquid through sedimentation, decantation, and loading using alum, students prepared a heterogeneous (insoluble) mixture of mud and water. They added alum to the mixture, causing the impurities to stick to the alum and making the water clear. This experiment demonstrated the separation process and provided students with hands-on experience. Additionally, the students performed an experiment illustrating the process of evaporation to separate salt from water. This activity not only sparked their curiosity and inquiry regarding the topic but also stimulated their research, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. BIOLOGY: "In learning, you will teach, and in teaching, you will learn." The chapter on 'Components of Food' was introduced in the class through a recall activity that involved identifying different types of nutrients present on the labels of their favorite snacks. To foster a student-centered approach, a 'peer teaching' method was employed, where the children taught their peers about the functions of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats using the 'show and tell' method. They presented real sources of CPF (Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) and explained their functions to their peers. This activity allowed the students to relate to 'SDG-3 Good Health and Well-being.' Furthermore, a laboratory activity was conducted in the Biology Lab where the students performed a starch test by adding iodine solution to a raw potato. They observed a change in color of the solution from brown to blue-black, indicating the presence of starch. Additionally, they performed a protein test by adding copper sulfate and caustic soda solution to raw chickpeas, resulting in a violet-colored solution, indicating the presence of proteins. The chapter concluded with the topic of "Balanced Diet" and "Deficiency Diseases." The students learned about the importance of a balanced diet in our lives, integrating the concept of 'SDG-3 Good Health and Well-being.' They understood that a balanced diet can vary for different individuals based on various factors. They also learned about different types of deficiency diseases, their causes, and ways to prevent them. As part of Hindi integration, the students composed a slogan on the importance of nutrients in our lives.
