MATHEMATICSINTEGERS: Students started their learning by sharing the previous knowledge of ‘Integers’ with a discussion where the students use integers in their day-to-day lives. Students gave various examples like – temperature, loss, bank statements etc. A PowerPoint presentation was shown to help them gain more clarity on the concepts. Students also enjoyed understanding the following concepts:
http://www.mathgoodies.com/games/integer_game/football.html ALGEBRA: The mathematics session commenced by checking the previous knowledge of Algebra and its related terms like – Constants, Terms, Coefficients, Variables etc in an ‘Expression’ through the day–to–day examples. Students gave various examples where they form an expression like – computing age, patterns using matchsticks etc. The practice exercises from the textbook and worksheets were done which strengthened their conceptual knowledge. SCIENCEChemistry: The topic ‘Properties of Materials’ commenced with a small hands-on activity. They collected different objects made from wood, plastic, fabric, copper wire, iron rod, paper, rubber, glass, and sponge. They observed the properties of materials like hardness, compressibility, and malleability. They also enjoyed the experiment on ‘Sinking or Floating’ in the class. They collected several things like an eraser, metal ruler, plastic ruler, sharpener, pin, a leaf, an empty bottle, a pencil paper clip, etc. They took notes, observed the changes, recorded systematically and drew inferences. Material Float/Sink in water Eraser Metal ruler Plastic ruler Sharpener Pin Pencil Glass Iron key They actively participated in the discussion to reason why some objects sink while some float. This was explained to the students with the help of relevant videos and diagrams. The new topic ‘Fibre to Fabrics’ started with the recapitulation of the prior knowledge about fibre, yarn and fabrics, and different types of fabrics i.e. natural, synthetic and mixed fibres. The students were asked to identify and bring the fabrics made of different types of fibres and share them with the class. To initiate the understanding of cotton fibres, students were asked to bring cotton and pull and stretch it to loosen its fibres. After which they rolled the fibres and made yarn from them. The video was shared with the students to understand the journey of cotton from plantation to becoming a fabric. They also did the weaving activity with paper to experience how weaving is done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEKVm5JxUN0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orKBbm9lJ1s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2GKVG-2qeM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UBhRgRyxi8 Physics Light, Shadows and Reflections Lesson ‘Light, Shadows and Reflection’ started with the discussion about the topics done in previous grades like the importance of light in enabling us to see things around us, the various types of materials which allow different amounts of light and how are we able to see any object when the light falls on it. When the students made the shadow of various objects around them with the help of torchlight, they were able to identify the objects required for the formation of a shadow. While making the shadow and changing the placement of object, light and screen they understood the various properties of a shadow like the changing size, colour and shape of a shadow. In the next topic, the students were explained about the working of a pin-hole camera and brainstormed on where can they observe a similar phenomenon (like a pin-hole camera) happening. They also conducted activities with light and mirrors to experience and understand the properties like ‘Lateral Inversion’, ‘Reflection’ and ‘Image Formation on a Mirror’. With an array of engaging activities, the learning became experiential and fun for the students. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yK8de22i2JU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcNEfwNeZss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4NBO9UkMvQ SOCIAL SCIENCECivics Rural and Urban Livelihood With the help of the Visible Thinking Strategy Connect Extend Challenge, the topic was introduced to students.
