MATHEMATICS UNDERSTANDING ELEMENTARY SHAPES: The lesson began by checking students’ previous knowledge of line segment, how to measure line segments using different instruments. Students gave various examples of measuring line segments like using a thread, ruler, divider, hand span etc. Students enjoyed learning the revolution concept using the hands of a clock and directions. Students also practiced the following concepts:
KNOWING OUR NUMBERS: Students started their learning of Mathematics through a recapitulation session. They were quizzed on the basic concepts of numbers learnt till now. They continued to enhance their understanding of the concepts of how to form numbers in the Indian and International system of Numeration with the help of the Place Value Chart. They understood that every number has a place – ones, tens, hundreds, thousands and so on. Taking their learning forward, they learnt the expanded form of the given numbers and how to write the place value of a digit in the place value chart. Students used their understanding and learned how to read large numbers in REAL LIFE. With great excitement, they explored the Sep-Edu Book and the Kit. Using the SEP Edu kit, they created different shapes using the 3D shape cubes and cuboids and showed their creativity at its best. SCIENCE Physics - The learners explored new ways of measuring the length of a curved line by using a thread through a Hands-On Activity. They measured the lengths of circular objects like bangle, curved glass by using the standard as well as non-standard units like hand span, pace and cubit (arm's length). They learnt different types of motion through Let’s Move Activity by moving their body on a motion of any song. This always opens up opportunities for students to take the initiatives, make decisions, and be accountable for their actions. For understanding the concept of Solution: solute and solvent, saturated and unsaturated solution, a Hands-on Learning activity was designed for them in which they added sugar in cold water (saturated solution) and sugar in hot water (unsaturated solution). Further, to understand the process of Separation of insoluble solid substances from a liquid through sedimentation, decantation and loading using alum, they all prepared a heterogeneous (insoluble) mixture of mud and water, added alum to it so that all the impurities stick to the alum making the water clear. They also performed an experiment showing the process of evaporation to separate salt from water. This not only evoked their inquiry related to the topic but also stimulated their research and problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Biology- To evoke an inquiry about the topic of the food chain and food web, several images of the sun, plants and animals were shown to the students. They brainstormed and classified them into producers, consumers and decomposers. This small activity helped them to construct a food chain of three and four trophic levels. They also learnt the impact on the feeding habits of animals if one or more animals are removed from the food chain. In addition to this, the Think, Pair and Share model on a virtual mode helped them to explore some easy ways to reduce food wastage like using specialized mobile apps, composting, and making a weekly food menu. SOCIAL SCIENCE Civics- Understanding Diversity Students were asked to observe the diversity among their classmates, native state, food, language etc. Based on their shared thoughts, they gained knowledge about the diversity in India. The global effort to fight Covid -19 was an example to make students understand unity in diversity. Based on the video shown to them, students were able to comprehend and correlate the geographical, economic and religious diversities of India. An activity was given to students to understand the diversity of food. Students selected a dish belonging to their region or city and shared it with the class. They also investigated the chosen dish or meal and discovered its story. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFtzLWzGvIw Geography- Globe, Latitudes and Longitudes Students described the details of a globe, latitudes & longitude with the help of a globe /ball/ muskmelon during the introductory lessons. A short video was shown to students for some clarification about latitudes, longitudes and grids. Few images were shown to students to understand heat zones. Based on a few calculations of Earth’s rotation and time calculation, students were able to understand the concept of time zones, GMT and IST. Students also gained knowledge about the International Date Line with the help of a short video. A brainstorming worksheet on Daylight Saving Time (DST) and Time zones was given where students explored a new concept. The children researched DST and very effectively interpreted its benefits with class. On the basis of their understanding about DST which aims to ensure less use of artificial light, Children integrated the concept with SDG 7 (Clean And Affordable Energy). ICT “The best tool available today for exploring real-life questions of quantity and change is the spreadsheet.” The students, in ICT classes, learnt Excel Software. They learnt different features available in Excel like entering data, changing cell content, inserting & deleting rows, columns etc. On “Mother’s Day” they created a drawing in Excel. They also learnt different possibilities available in Excel to make any task easy, for instance, AutoFill and Flash Fill. ENGLISH The grammar lessons set the tone of the month. A variety of probing questions enabled the students to recapitulate and classify the types of nouns, examples and their application. The sub-topic forming nouns was introduced to the students through the basic knowledge of abstract nouns and suffixes. They loved the interactive session of writing their responses in the chat box and sharing verbally too. The concept of all types of nouns was strengthened through a lot of practice in the grammar book, worksheets and notebook. Eliciting responses while reading the PPT about the types of letters was another interesting way to get their attention. The students not only shared their prior knowledge, relevance and application of letters in the current scenario but also minutely observed a sample to deduce the format of the letters- both Formal and Informal. The practice questions attempted by the students helped them work upon their style of writing and structure it. The students displayed immense improvement in Note Taking Skills as was evident in their submissions. They also took a Class Test on MS Forms to recapitulate the Grammar topic- Sentences. For more practice, they enjoyed attempting short quizzes on the website Quizziz.com. The students continued to explore new words from the NIE and framed sentences in the English Channel.
