“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” Helen Keller Optimistic October has been a month of hope and new achievements. With the arrival of this month, we have been able to commence the classes on a hybrid model. The exciting stepping in of our zealous students on campus witnessed them beaming with excitement and happiness. The core value of the month ‘I Am Peace’ was discussed well during the CT lessons in which students could understand the concept and its importance by watching videos on the theme. The students shared their views about peace within and everywhere. The festive season of Dussehra and Diwali has been enjoyed in the special assemblies and several cultural performances by our talented Suncitizens. The significance of the festivals was conveyed well. The students commenced their morning assemblies every day with beautiful thoughts and enriching words. They enjoyed reading the NIE and sharing numerous facts and regular updates about vaccination. Integration, being a part of the school pedagogy, the zealous learners participated well in the Maths- Science and ICT Integration Week and were exposed to various new digital tools. MATHEMATICSDATA HANDLING: The topic ‘Data Handling’ was conducted as a Student-Led session where some students adorned the hat of an educator and taught the concept to their peers. The concepts Data Handling Introduction, Tally Marks, Bar Graphs, Pictographs and Line Graphs were presented by the students. In addition to taking up the role of a teacher, a few students were also given the responsibility of making question banks, writing the report for the whole session and sharing the pictures as a photographer. Students gave various examples where they use Data like – comparing scores, weather change, marks obtained etc. Students also enjoyed understanding the following concepts:
INTEGRATION WITH ICT – Students used Excel Software to create Bar Graphs, Line Graphs and Pie Charts with a variety of examples. A worksheet based on SDG -13(Climate Action) was done from the SDG Book which strengthened their awareness about the same. SCIENCEPhysics: The learners started their journey of Magnetism with the inquiry of magnets and the concept about attraction. They brought two bar-shaped magnets closer to each other and learnt about the magnetic force. They classified different materials like a coin, plastic ruler, copper wire, paper clips, iron nails as magnetic and non-magnetic substances through the experiment of bringing magnets closer to these objects. They also learnt to make a permanent magnet from a steel bar by striking the steel bar about 30-40 times with the same pole of a magnet in the same direction. Learners understood the attractive property of magnets by rolling the magnet bar on stapler pins (made of iron). Such hands-on activity helped them to observe and conclude that magnetic force is strongest at the poles. They classified the changes into natural, man-made, reversible and irreversible changes. In addition to this, a video on climate change was also shown to them. Through this video, SDG-13 Climate Action was reiterated and thereafter the students shared their views through a group presentation on whether the ozone layer depletion, greenhouse effect, global warming are reversible or irreversible changes and how can we combat them by bringing little changes in our day to day activities. The students first shared their prior knowledge about the various parts of a plant like the roots, stem leaves etc. Their learning took a step further, while they knew about the fibrous and tap roots but they now learnt about identifying the root system of plants by just observing their leaves. They learnt that the roots, leaves and stems have many additional functions apart from what they had been studying earlier. For instance, the roots of the Banyan Tree hang from the top to provide it extra support, leaves of a Pitcher Plant modified to form a pitcher like structure to catch insects for fulfilling the need of food in the plant and the stems of Grapevine modified to form tendrils to provide additional support to the plant. They observed various leaves and discovered that the venations (arrangement of veins) can vary in different plants. To learn about the various parts of a flower, they dissected the Hibiscus flower and observed the various parts themselves. All these experiences made their learning fun and interesting. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuBDV_pZmXM SOCIAL SCIENCEHistory: New Ideas and Religions To introduce the topic, visual prompts about Buddhism and Jainism were shown to students. The students shared their observations based on their prior knowledge and associations. With the help of a Flowchart and some handouts in the Class Notebook, Students gained knowledge about the system of Tirthankars, the Principles of Jainism, Sects of Jainism etc. The Storytelling Method was used to explain the four sights of Gautama Buddha’s life emphasizing the four noble truths. All the students enthusiastically participated in the skit based on Gautam Buddha’s life and acquainted themselves with his teaching of Ashtangika Marg- Eight-Fold Path which can put an end to all the sufferings. Students could resonate the monthly core value - I AM PEACE with the principles of Mahavira and Gautama Buddha and took a vow to embrace these teachings in their lives. The learners could relate the theme with some of the other incidents from their lives when fixing a problem became a challenge for them. Further, the students delved deeper into the text by framing questions, discussing the aspects of comprehension, prediction and noting down the new vocabulary. They made a connection with the story and tried to relate the same. Then they consolidated their learning in the written form in their notebooks. The learners exhibited a great interest in reading and understanding ‘Hamlet’ by Shakespeare (Supplementary reader). They not only understood the series of events but also understood the concept of tragedy and the moral - the revenge itself is deadly. In sync with the monthly theme- I am peace, the learners understood the concept well that had there been peace maintained, the repercussions could be avoided. In grammar, the students recapitulated the concept of verbs and practiced forms of verbs, synonyms, antonyms, making verbs from nouns, phrasal verbs and Subject Verb Agreement. They learnt the application of verbs in different sentences. Live worksheets were practiced as a reflection activity. The students analysed several articles from the NIE also and discussed the reason behind liking a specific article along with the important points kept in mind while writing an article.
