“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” -Maya Angelou Nurturing November has been a month of celebrations and happiness all around. It was a time of festivities and celebrations. November has been another month of learning new concepts with the maximum participation in different activities which not only honed the skills of the students but also gave them a platform to showcase their talent. The universal theme ‘I am Tolerant’ proved to be a big support for the young minds with the help of which the value of being tolerant and content was inculcated well. The students happily narrated their personal experiences during the discussion time in the morning assembly sessions pondering over the idea of tolerance from different perspectives and understanding. They could understand the value of showing consideration and regard for others. They shared their happiness by contributing beautifully to the project ‘Spreading Smiles’ where they thought selflessly about everyone and tried to make an effort to add happiness to others’ lives too. The universal value could be easily related to virtues like team spirit and sportsmanship as we enthusiastically took part in the Suncity Run 2.0 with great zeal and zest. The proud Suncitizens displayed their ardour and passion by celebrating Diwali on the virtual platform integrating all five languages while sharing the significance of the festival. The beautifully integrated ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ activity as a tribute to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose with a talk followed by singing the song ‘Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja’. The students commenced their morning assemblies every day with beautiful thoughts and enriching words. They enjoyed reading the NIE with a focus on current affairs and interesting articles. MATHEMATICSFRACTIONS: Students started their learning of Mathematics through a recall knowledge session. Fractions were introduced. Students gave various examples where they see fractions of the numbers like – one slice of pizza, chocolates, sandwiches etc. Students understood the concept of Equivalent Fractions by Flash card Activity. Students also enjoyed understanding of the following concepts:
The Practice exercises from the textbook and worksheets were done which strengthened their conceptual knowledge. SCIENCEBiology: Getting to know Plants The chapter concluded with the learning about the importance of pollination for the process of fertilization and how the ovule and ovary change into fruits and seeds by undergoing changes in them. Later the students identified and gave examples of various fruits and the seeds found in those fruits.. Physics: Magnetism The students enjoyed learning about the concepts of magnetism through hands-on experiments. The activities helped them to understand the properties of magnetism like the ‘Directive property’ through freely suspending the magnet to a string and understanding that every time when you change the direction it turns and faces north and south only. They also used magnets to understand that repulsion is a sure test of magnetism and that earth itself is a giant magnet. The students saw and understood about the working of magnetic compasses. Through videos and class discussions they also understood the proper way of keeping magnets and how a magnet can lose its magnetism. The uses of magnets in daily life were also discussed with students. Chemistry: Taking the topic of ‘Changes Around us’ further, the students learnt about different types of changes like ‘Reversible and Irreversible’ and ‘Physical and Chemical changes. The topic reversible and irreversible changes were introduced with the help of Hands on Activity. Where they were asked to cut paper into squares and then join them. They were then asked to think whether the change was reversible or irreversible. Was the paper the same as it was before? Further, to make them understand the term chemical change, they all performed the reaction between a baking soda and lemon juice. They observed the evolution of carbon dioxide. Through this activity, they learned different characteristics of chemical changes. Such experiential learning helped them to differentiate between physical and chemical changes. Several examples of physical and chemical changes were also explained through a live worksheet. In the worksheet, they classified various examples into physical and chemical changes that helped them get complete clarity. They also learnt about the factors that can bring about changes like temperature, pressure, mixing where they discussed about the examples like cooling and heating of water, change in shape and size of a fluffy solids like sponge, dissolving of sugar in water, etc. The topic was integrated with Art where they made a poster on various types of changes in which various examples of changes around us were shown. The concept of folding and faulting and formation of mountains like fold mountains, block mountains, and volcanic mountains were discussed with the help of some activities with real objects available in the classroom and some pictures. Important mountain ranges of the world were shown to them with some pictures and Google Earth. With map-reading activity, they located different mountain ranges, plains, and plateaus. Students also gained knowledge about the other physical divisions on the surface of the earth like plateaus and plains. Students evaluated the geographical interdependence of the physical divisions They even suggested the importance of each landform as a useful natural resource for humans and the need to respect them and stop polluting them. A worksheet was shared with students based on different physical features of the world. History: The First Empire The Mauryan empire was introduced to students while explaining Alexander's invasion of India. With the help of a video on the Mauryan Empire, the story of Chandragupta Maurya and Chanakya was shared with them. Students analyzed the Mauryan administration and how it is correlated with today’s administrative structure. They also gained knowledge about Ashokan edicts, administrative and religious measures enforced by Ashoka. Students summarized the Kalinga war and its effect on king Ashoka and shared their views in class. They learnt about Symbol and different types of animation Tween – Motion Tween, Shape Tween and Classic Tween. They created an animated video based on Eco friendly Diwali. Topic was concluded by conducting online quiz. ENGLISH“Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort.” Franklin D. Roosevelt A literature piece with the message of ‘a will to sacrifice’ was taken up in the month of November. ‘The Gift of Magi’ was introduced through a discussion in which the students were asked to write about the best gift they had ever received. Further, the students delved deeper into the text by framing questions, discussing the aspects of comprehension, prediction and noting down the new vocabulary. They made connections with the story and tried the same. Then they consolidated their learning in written form in their notebooks. Students were introduced to written works by O’ Henry and watched the video as well. The students were motivated to read the poem ‘Someone’ over the weekend and share their understanding about the same. Post this, question answers, new vocabulary and poetic devices of the poem were discussed in the class In grammar, the students recapitulated the concept of Tenses and practiced indefinite, progressive and perfect tenses with a recap of some strong and weak verbs. A quiz on MS Forms was practiced as a reflection activity. In writing, the students built on their knowledge of poster writing. They started off with a handout about the elements of poster writing and attempted to design a poster on the basis of the sample posters provided to them. They attempted to make posters on the given topics individually. (based on SDGs).
