It is the time when our children are in the mood of celebrations of Christmas and the New Year. December has been another month of learning new concepts with the maximum participation in different activities like intra and inter school competitions, which not only honed their skills but also gave them a platform to showcase their talents. Universal theme ‘ I am wise ’ proved to be a big support for the young minds with the help of which the value of being wise and acting wse could be inculcated well. The students happily narrated their personal experiences during the discussion time in the morning assembly sessions promising to be wise and thoughtful always. They shared their happiness by contributing beautifully in the project ‘The Joy of Giving’ where they thought selflessly about everyone and tried to make an effort to add happiness to other’s lives too. The dynamic Suncitizens displayed their ardour and passion by celebrating Christmas on a virtual platform. The students commenced their morning assemblies everyday with beautiful thoughts and enriching words. They enjoyed reading the NIE and sharing numerous facts and regular updates about various competitions.. MATHEMATICSDECIMALS: Students started their learning of Mathematics through a recapitulation session post in which the topic 'Decimals' was introduced. Students shared various examples where they see Decimals of the numbers like – Temperature, Marks, weighing machine, bowling in cricket etc. Students understood the basics of the concept, its place value and comparison between Decimal Numbers through Place Value Chart. The Practice exercises from the textbook and worksheets were done which strengthened their conceptual knowledge. Students with great excitement explored the Sep-Edu Book and the Kit. Using the SEP Edu kit, they have replicate the shapes on grids and showed their creativity at its best. SCIENCEChemistry: To invoke inquiry about the concept ‘Sorting Materials into Groups’ various images of materials like cotton, chilli, wheat, silk, apple, etc. were shown to the students. They classified the given materials based on the categories of fruits, vegetables, cereals, fibres and spices. They could relate it to the importance of classification in their daily lives. They also learnt about materials and their types by identifying the different materials of the given objects. With the help of the following table, they understood that the same material can be used to make different types of objects. The students flexed their biceps and triceps to understand how the skeletal muscles contract and relax to move our bones. To understand the movement in different animals and insects, the students were first shown the videos which gave them a broad idea of the movement in insects like an earthworm, snails, snakes, cockroaches etc. Thereafter, they brainstormed, referred to their notes and explained the movements. They could relate the movement of the earthworm to the action similar to that of a spring. Based on prior knowledge, they summarized the ‘Democratic Government’. Students recognized the ‘Elements of Democracy’ with reference to the election procedure followed in school for the ‘Student Council elections’. The other ways of participating in Democratic Government were paraphrased for the students like accountability, freedom, resolving conflicts, etc. and they further shared their views about the same. Students expressed their views about equality and justice in our country. They also suggested a few steps for the betterment of weaker sections including steps taken by the government. History: Contact with distant land Students gained knowledge about the ‘Sangam Age’ in which many ancient ‘Tamil Poets’ collectively compiled their literature. They also summarized the ruling dynasties of South India, they were together known as Muvendars-
Geography- India- Physical Features A project was given to students based on specific sub-topics and the class was divided into different groups such as Northern mountain, Northern plain, Desert, Plateau, etc. They enthusiastically researched and gave presentations based on the rubrics which were shared with the children in advance. ICTDuring the process of learning Python, which is the basis of learning programming, the students learnt basic coding in Python using 'Input Command and Variables.' They realized that any task they perform in their daily routine consists of three steps – Input, Processing, and Output. The extracted ‘Huck saves the Life of Widow Douglas’ was introduced through a discussion during which the students were asked to write about how they have ever helped others. They also shared their understanding of courage and presence of mind supported with relevant evidence. The students delved deeper into the text by framing questions, discussing the aspects of comprehension, prediction and noting down the new vocabulary. They made connections with the story and shared personal anecdotes. Then they consolidated their learning in the written form in their notebooks. Students were introduced to written works by Mark Twain and watched the video (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer) as well. The students enjoyed reading ‘Taming of the Shrew’ from the Supplementary Reader ‘Tales from Shakespeare’. They were encouraged to discuss the different genres – comedy and tragedy. They watched a video of the story, took notes and shared their views in the class. They were also given the link to understand the concept of Shakespearean comedy well. In grammar, the students recapitulated the concept of ‘Adverbs’ and practiced several exercises based on the position of adverbs, one adverb for many, adverb clauses etc. An enrichment exercise in the worksheet was practiced as a reflection activity. In writing, the students built on their knowledge of ‘Newspaper Report Writing’. They started with a handout about the elements of newspaper report writing and attempted to write a few reports based on the sample reports provided to them. -David Hackett Fischer Suncity School- 37 D organized the second edition of Inter-House GK Quiz Competition on the virtual platform in sync with Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsava. The theme of the quiz was My India, My Pride. The event aimed at enabling students to value, respect and know more about the rich heritage of our country. After the screening round, students were selected to represent their house in two categories: grades III-V and grades VI-IX. The rounds ranged from picking clues, audio –visuals and connecting the clues.The event concluded with the encouraging words of the principal Ms. Guneet Ohri. She motivated students to explore more about our country’s rich cultural heritage and value the contribution of our freedom fighters. Pacific House emerged as the winner in Grades III-V category and Arctic House won in Grades VI-IX category.
